  TDP Recognition and Endorsements

Tlholego has received wide coverage in the media for its work, and has been endorsed by Government, Private Sector and Community Organizations for creating some of the highest-quality solutions to housing and food security needs in South Africa today. TDP is now internationally recognized as a reference point and demonstration center for sustainable living in rural South Africa.

In 1997, TDP director Paul Cohen was awarded an Ashoka fellowship in recognition of the innovative nature of the TDP and it’s potential to become a model of sustainable development.  The Ashoka International fellowship invests in pioneering individuals who are leading social entrepreneurs.  Through its global networks, Ashoka supports creative resourcing opportunities to further the work of its fellows.

  • Global Ecovillage Network, 24 November 1997.

“I am pleased to recommend the Tlholego Development Project as a good example of people centered, sustainable community development.  The steering committee of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) were guests at Tlholego for 10 days at the end of October 1997.  During this period we conducted a workshop for 30 participants on village design, took part in an open day for 200 people and had many opportunities to get to know both staff and site.

Even though each of the elements of the project are still in an early phase, we as visitors to the center are amazed by how much it has been possible to achieve in the short years since the farm was bought and the land made into trust.

The Global Ecovillage Network is pleased to endorse the work of the project and to welcome Tlholego as a focal point for Ecovillage Development in Southern Africa.”

  • Office of the Premier, North West Province, 10 June 1996.

“The Office of the Premier of the North West, in collaboration with the Office of the President, RDP, have carefully reviewed your progress to date as well as the phase two business plan, interim phase business plan and the prospectus portfolio for the Tlholego Development Project (TDP).  These offices fully endorse the aims and objectives of the TDP and encourage donor organizations to support the venture as an important contribution to rural education, village design, food security and enterprise, based on sustainable resource development.”

  • Ministry of the Office of the President, 8 May 1996.

“The advantage of the system is not easily measured in the short term but measured over a longer period (more that five years), benefits will become apparent.  Indications will take the form of food sufficiency, a greater understanding by farmers of agriculture and land dynamics, an increased quality of life, a decrease in the use of fossil fuels, a decrease in the use of synthetic energy and an increase in the number of small, medium and micro enterprises (SMME’s) emanating from such a project.”
